She was a confirmed 20-a-day girl, but Jennifer Aniston has given up smoking
after given the sscary news that a friend has cancer.

'I couldn't put tobacco in my body after that,' she admits.  'I've wanted to
quit for so long, but it was something that I enjoyed.  I guess this was the
jolt I needed.'

The Friends beauty discared four cartons of Marlboro Lights - the trendy
brand smoked by countless showbiz personalities and models such as Kate Moss
- and threw out lighters and all ashtrays from her home, even though the
other half of Hollywood's hottest couple, Brad Pitt, is said to be sill
hooked on the fatal weed.

Jennifer quit after an old school friend Lauren Daviss found she had lung
cancer... Lauren's mother Gloria says: "She's going to be OK.  Jennifer got a
shock when she found out, we all did.  They've both
smoked since their college days."

After hearing about Lauren, Jennifer 'acted instantly', despite being a smoker
for the last 15 years

It's not just the health issues that are bothering Jennifer, though, as she
recently confessed to friends that she was 'sick and tired' of being pictured
in the papers puffing away.

She's said to have been particularly upset by a photograph taken while out on
a Santa Monica shopping trip with lover Brad, which showed her with a
cigarette dangling from her mouth and left the otherwise health-conscious
star literally fuming at her own bad habits.

Up until now the actess smoked a pack of Marlboro Lights a day and admits
she's battled for years to quit.  But Jennifer denies she smokes to suppress
her appetite, even though weight is obviously a contentious issue for the
slight star.

Yet, despite many female smokers fearing they'll pile on the pounds once they
stop smoking, this is not thought to be the reason Jennifer kept up the habit
for so long.  According to her friend, model Brittany Kenna: 'Weight control
doesn't come into it.  Jen's a typical Greek girl and enjoys a cup of black
coffee and a ciggle in the morning.  She used to joke it's no worse than
breathing in exhaust fumes from traffic or the LA smog, bug she's changed her
tune now.'

But with Brad still smoking, it remains to be seen if Jennifer can resist
taking up cigarettes again.
