"Pleshette smokes in four scenes. In the first, she takes a cigarette from a cigarette box and lights it, with an inhale, from a lighter on a chain round her neck. The next scene shows her striking a match against the kitchen wall and lighting her cigarette before the gas hob. She drags, coughs, dangles, clenches her cigarette between her teeth as she speaks, coughs a couple more times, and, when reminded that she has sworn off cigarettes, replies defiantly 'I have no character. Besides I like to cough. What's it to you?' before taking another drag. In the same scene she lights another with an inhale, exhales, then takes a second drag. A third scene shows two more drags. The fourth shows her lighting up with a faint talk-exhale. Page says she 'must have a cigarette', but takes just one drag and exhale when a lighted cigarette is passed to her."
