| Virgen de la lujuria, La (2002) | Ariadna Gil, C, G "Set in the 40s with a bit of a self-consciously melodramatic/film noir sensibility, with Gil as a hooker named Lola, this had all the makings of a great one. And it gets off to a terrific start -- at the beginning of the film she has a spectacularly lit drag and exhale in which the smoking is clearly the focus. After that, things decline a bit. Oh, she has lots of smoking scenes -- including a couple with cigars -- scattered throughout the rest of the film. And she's a world-class smoker in the finest Euro-actress style. Unfortunately, the director seems not to care what he has to work with here, and gives her smoking no emphasis whatsoever in either camera angles, blocking, or lighting. A good one that could have and should have been great."
