"Shannon smokes a Lucky Strike unfiltered, allowing some of the smoke to
exit her mouth before french-inhaling it back in, then she exhales out her
mouth and nose. In the next edit (probably from a different take), she
exhales some more smoke. Though she may not have looked like a natural
smoker, she was smoking an unusually strong cigarette not generally
available to the public."

"Smokes in most scenes, but not really convincing."
"As an entra ... I saw Shannon smoking for her scene up close. Before one
take, she was merely puffing, not inhaling, and she seemed disgusted by the
smoke, so it would seem as if she didn't smoke IRL. But she was smoking
Lucky Strike unfiltered cigarettes, so she might not have been used to
cigarettes of that high strength. Eventually, she got to the point where
she could inhale them, and she even ended up french-inhaling, but not
intentionally. The smoke was so strong, that she had to open her mouth to
get it inhaled, and the smoke got sucked in through her mouth and nose.
There were also many female extras, most of whom were college age (18-22),
who smoked during filming of the ballroom dance scene, but none of those
smoking scenes ended up in the finished product. One of the scenes that
ended up on the cutting room floor involved me lighting a girl's cigarette
as the camera panned by. Incidentally, some of the girls in the scene
didn't smoke IRL, but were willing to smoke for the scene. But they all
smoked the same kind of cigarettes (Lucky Strike unfiltered) to keep with
the show's time setting (the 1940's). One blonde girl who managed to steal
a drag between takes even took an unfiltered cigarette from another actor,
but upon dragging from it, realized, in three steps, just how strong these
cigarettes were. After inhaling a little bit, (1) some of the smoke ended
up leaking out her nose, then (2) she had to open her mouth to inhale into
her lungs, and the smoke got french-inhaled, and (3) she finally exhaled.
Surprisingly, no one in the cast or crew thought to use cigarette holders
for this scene."
