"It may have been [Theron's] best acting performance, but the smoking was very disappointing. She smokes in just about every scene, but rarely do we see the inhales, and I can't remember one visible exhale. She also is made up to look terrible. All in all very disappointing."

Suddenly Theron puts the cigarette right in front of Ricci's lips and, after a bit of hesitation, Christina takes a drag. I think she coughs a little and gives a sweet self-conscious smile after exhaling, sort of recognizing that 'o.k., if you want, I'll start smoking.' And subsequently she's shown smoking several times, in a little less manic style than Theron (as befits her more passive character)."
