| Before Sunset (2004) | Julie Delpy "although her character didn't smoke as a 23-year old in 'Before Sunrise,' she does smoke in one scene in this equally romantic sequel. Early in her reunion with Ethan Hawke's character, they go to a coffee house. Soon after they sit down, she lights up nonchalantly and takes a drag. It's a nice enough shot, but her exhale is barely visible. Ethan Hawke's only reaction is to ask for one himself - there's no discussion that now she's smoking. Then, frustratingly, for the rest of the scene she only holds, or, if she drags, it's only when the camera is on Ethan and not her. But she always looks beautiful and natural as a smoker, even just holding. In fact, I also saw one still picture recently - I think as a DVD extra but I can't remember - from the actual making of this film in which she was watching the director work and seemed to be holding IRL, but the picture was cropped just enough that I wasn't sure. I love the French, but they can be so frustrating sometimes!"
