"Lot's of smoking in this film. Spacek smokes in 3 scenes, and Duvall smokes in probably 8 or 9. One good scene with Spacek, and several good close-ups of Duvall."
"Spacek has a marvelous close-up lighting while on the phone. She picks up a pack of cigarettes, extracts one with her lips, touches the flame of a lighter to it, and exhales a light (but obviously inhaled) wisp of smoke."
"4 scenes for Spacek. First, accepts a cigarette and a light from Duvall in a bar. Takes a drag and expels a mouthful of smoke, since her character is very naive at this point. Second scene, takes a cigarette from Duvall's pack on the nightstand and sticks it in the corner of her mouth, but doesn't light. By the third scene, her character has 'changed,' and she lights up and exhales while doing her toenails. Appears experienced, but the exhale is invisible. Fourth scene, the fantastic light-up on the phone already described. Keep watching, though: Subsequent drag, snap inhale, silent talk-exhale as she mouths something to a companion, finishing up with thick jets of smoke from her nose. Definitely some of her best work!"
