"Both Kavner and Ullman smoke cigarettes in a numer of segments in several episodes which are too numerous to list here with both of them having cool and occasionaly funny lightups, inhales and exhales. Ullman's characters include a Russian trapeze performer, postal worker Tina, divorcee Ginny Tillman, hippy Summer Storm, and aging actress Sandra Decker. Kavner's characters include secondary ones like Francesca's mother, stressed out radio employee Marcy, and a psychatrist paitent, among others."
"[Kavner] In most episodes she appeared to be a non-smoker who didn't inhale. Then in one momentous episode, she actually did a good inhale followed by a great exhale. The audience cheered and clapped, although there was nothing else happening at that moment to warrant it. I suspect that this was one of many takes in which Kavner tried to smoke for real, although why is anybody's guess (perhaps she had been ribbed by Ullman)."
